When you visit an island in the tropics,
exploring it on a mountain bike is probably
not the first thing which comes up on your
mind.However, Curacao offers great mountain
bike trails, for any level. We only ride
during the early morning or in the late
afternoon.
But why mountain biking on Curacao?
Mountain biking is the perfect way to explore
the island. Curacao has a lot more to offer
than sun, sea, and beaches! However, the
best spots are hard to find without a guide,
even with a map. No problem, that’s
why WannaBike organizes guided mountain
bike tours. With an experienced tour guide,
you’ll travel back through the stirring
history of the island. We’ll take
you to forts, plantations, country estates,
mangrove forests and caves along the rugged
north coast. You’ll be surprised by
the rapid variation and alteration of the
landscape.
You’ll discover that this island is
much more than dry, bare rock, or according
to the Spanish an “ Isla Inutile”,

Curacao
offers over ten mountain bike areas in which
the trails all vary in surroundings length
and steepness
So whether you are a beginner, or ready
for the challenge on more technical trails,
it’s all out there. Within one area,
the tracks also vary in level. There are
wonderful larger dirt roads, on which beginners
and intermediate will enjoy the ride. But
we will also face dirt roads which are more
like rocky single trails, with cacti on
both sides of you!

|
| Jan
Thiel lagoon, located on the southeast side
of the island, is a very popular area for
local mountain bikers of all levels. |
|
The area is one of the most unique nature
reserves on Curacao characterized by its rare
vegetation, exceptional bird life, and unspoiled
views. The salt flats here are still intact
and the land house Jan Thiel,is beautifully
restored. During the rainy season this area
is not always accessible. From the Lions
Dive &Beach Hotel you’ll find
the mountain bike trail that was developed
for World Cup Mountain Biking race to Curacao
in 2006. |
|
| The
Peninsula is great ‘warming up’
before going to mountain bike in the tougher
Jan Thiel Lagoon, with only dirt roads. |
|
The island is famous for its rich history,
and we will visit Fort Beekenburg, Quarantine
building. We leave the area via a wonderful
off- the-road single trail alongside de “Kabrietenbaai”
and the “Spanish waters” .Also
very suitable for tours with families including
kids. |
|
| Christoffelpark
National Park is a “must do” and
consists of 3 former plantations, Savonet,
Zorgvliet en Zevenbergen. Best part of the
island if you want to exercise your climbing
skills (>25%) Only for very experienced
and fit mountain bikers! |
|
Because the park is a protected area you’ll
find local birds and plants, including many
species you will not easily see anywhere else
on the island, for example wild orchids. The
Curacao White Tailed deer, of which there
are only about 250 left, is also an inhabitant
of the park Furthermore, the caves with Indian
paintings, Piedra di Monton, and the land
house Savonet are worth visiting. The guided
tour of WannaBike to the Seru Bientu will
be a climax during your stay. |
|
| This
area is characterized by the varying nature
of the landscape and situated at a nice and
idyllic fisherman’s village St Michiel |
|
Behind Diving school Wederfoort you drop directly
into the salinja (salt pond). The first stretch
of the salt flats is a good place to practice
your technical biking. The route continues
on into the beautiful green nature reserve
of Malpais with the Lago Dispare (missing
lake). With a little luck you can find the
white-tailed deer also here. Via the circle
at Bullenbaai you’ll cross over the
street and head back again through the salinja.
This same course is used every year for the
Off the Road Triathlon of Boca Sami. |
|
| Koraal
Tabak is the trail, at which you can experience
the rough north cost of the island. A lot
of mountain bike races are being organized
in this area, which is not a tough or technical
one |
|
The WannaBike tour guide takes you from the
thick green mangroves along the shore of St.
Joris Bay towards Koraal Tabak. Kueba Koraal
Tabak (the cave) is well worth visiting. A
refreshing wind blasts through here, and you
can sit back and enjoy the fantastic view.
Once you reach the rugged north coast, you
are again confronted with a greatly varied
landscape. The waves crash against the cliffs
with momentous force, and you’ll be
biking over coral rock here. You can choose
between riding a short circle with some challenging
hills at the end, or bike further along the
windmills in the direction of Ronde Klip. |
|
| Plantation
Porto Marie is the place to be for hikers
and bikers who want to enjoy unspoiled nature
and authentic culture. |
The history of the estate (594 hectares) starts
in the year 1684, and was called Puerto Maria
back then. You can even walk the same route
as the slaves walked from the mansion to the
'magazina" (storage place). You will
have the feeling you traveled back in time
as the ruin's are still there. Furthermore,
bird lovers can enjoy this area. A very nice
mountain bike trail has been developed here,
on which the “off the road Triathlon”
is organized. Porto Marie’s splendid
beach and dive facilities make your experience
complete. www.playaportomari.com |

With already over 12 official registered
cycling clubs, and a lot of informal clubs
of friends and colleagues, who are mountain
biking, we can really see a ‘mountain
bike hype’ going on. Almost each weekend
one of the clubs organizes a race, both
for road – and mountain bikers. We
even organize special kid’s races,
and try to support young talents as much
as we can. You are more than welcome to
register and join us for race. The best
way to experience our local mountain bike
scene! On www.curacaobiking.com
you’ll find more information and a

“WannaBike
and Curacao surprised us very much. Great
tour guides take small groups to beautiful,
and sometimes technical challenging trails.
This gives a total different impression
of the island, and is something every mountain
biker should experience. Besides this mountain
bike experience, WannaBike recommends on
al must see’s en do’s on the
island!”
